January 1, 1876The Original Campus, Circa 1876A view of the earliest Texas A&M campus buildings at the time of the university’s founding.

Gathright HallGathright Hall was completed in September of 1876 at a cost of $38,000. Named for the first president of Texas A&M, Thomas Gathright, it was also known as the Mess Hall and Steward's Hall. It was demolished in 1933.

Faculty HousingFaculty housing was originally built in September of 1876, starting with 5 professors' residences at a cost of $3,000 each. The original housing along Throckmorton Street became known as "Quality Row." Over time three of the original five brick homes were demolished and replaced with frame homes, and all were removed in 1948 to make way for a park. The area is now part of Aggie Park.

Old MainOld Main was built in September 1876 at an original cost of $100,000. It was built of brick made from local clay that was fired on site. It was destroyed by fire in 1912. After it burned, the remaining walls were pulled down by students with ropes following artillery barrages, rifle fire, and dynamite charges. The Academic Building building now stands on the site previously occupied by Old Main.

January 1, 1887Early Campus ExpansionNew buildings and facilities added during the 1880s reflect the campus’s early growth.

Pfeuffer HallPfeuffer Hall was built in 1887 at a cost of $11,500 and razed in 1954.

Austin HallAustin Hall was built in 1888 and razed in 1955. This building cost $11,000. It was the first campus bulding to oriented with compass, with its front elevation facing due south.

January 1, 1900Transition at the Turn of the CenturyCirca 1900, the removal of several early buildings marked a shift in the campus’s physical development.

Science HallScience Hall was erected in 1900 at a cost of $31,000 and razed in 1963. This building was originally known as the Agricultural Building but later known as the Science Hall.

1883 Train DepotThe original depot was constructed in 1883. The building was replaced in 1900. The depot was razed in 1966.
